Supermax, a contraction of super-maximum, is a U.S. term that refers to the most secure prisons in the prison system. There are two dedicated supermax facilities in the U.S. federal prison system; they are in Marion, Illinois and in Florence, Colorado. There are also a number in state prison systems, among the best-known of which are Pelican Bay in Northern California and Tamms in Illinois. Created October 23, 2006. |
