Retirement is the status of a worker who has stopped working on a permanent basis. This usually happens upon reaching a determined age, when physical conditions (such as those resulting from illness or an accident) do not allow the person to work any more, or even for personal choice. The concept of retirement is relatively new, as traditionally workers would continue to work as long as they lived or were physically and mentally capable of working. However, the increased wealth of many societies, along with the development of social security and private pensions, has made retirement common and something that many people look forward to. There are some people who do not want to retire even if they have the financial ability to do so. These are often people for whom their work is more than just a means of earning money, such as people who are engaged in creative and public service pursuits. Created October 23, 2006. |
