Kurt Donald Cobain (1967 - 1994) was the leader, lead singer and guitarist of the grunge band Nirvana. He is also the top earning dead celebrity as of 2006, having replaced Elvis Presley as the holder of that somewhat dubious honor. The word grunge originally referred to dirtiness, grittiness and crudeness. In a music context, it is a style that apparently originated in Seattle that is largely a combination of punk and heavy metal styles and emphasizes loudness and dissonance. A major event in Cobain's life was his marriage to Courtney Love, a singer and guitarist who first saw him perform in 1988. The two discovered that they both had crushes on each other, and they were married on Waikiki beach in Hawaii in 1992. Despite his great popularity and financial success, Cobain's short life was characterized by personal problems, including habitual drug use, depression and an inability to cope with his fame. His death from a shotgun blast in the spare room above the garage at his house near Lake Washington in Seattle was officially classified as a suicide, but there were a number of discrepancies and the case remains unsolved.
